How to Become a Plumber in Massachusetts – Step by Step

To become a plumber in Massachusetts you have to obtain both on-the-job training and formal classroom education.

The state issues the following licenses:

  • Apprentice Plumber License (training)
  • Journeyman Plumber License
  • Master Plumber License

Apprentice Plumber License – Training and Schooling

The apprentice plumber license isn’t an actual license.

It is the period while you are registered as an apprentice.

Before you can apply for any of the plumbing licenses Massachusetts issues you must complete a training program that will consist of both an apprenticeship and formal classroom education.

The first step into your apprenticeship is submitting a board-approved application to become an apprentice.

Within 9 months of the acceptance of your application (becoming an apprentice) you must begin your educational program.

When it comes to training choices you can choose between enrolling in a:

  • secondary student in a Public Comprehensive High School Career
  • Vocational Technical School Program
  • Apprenticeship program
  • or become an employee of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts licensed master plumber

No matter what sort of program or work you choose within your training you must obtain 6800 of work experience, which you can get as an apprentice or working directly under the supervision of a journeyman plumber who is the employee of a Commonwealth of Massachusetts licensed master plumber.

The other requirement is that you must obtain up to 165 hours of formal classroom education annually, or 550 hours total throughout 4 years.

After completing these requirements you can go on to apply for your Journeyman Plumber License.

Journeyman Plumber License

To apply for your Journeyman Plumber License you are required to have at least 5100 of experience as an apprentice or a worker under a Commonwealth of Massachusetts licensed master plumber, and at least 330 hours of classroom education (theory).

When applying for your journeyman plumber license you must submit an application form and pay the $52 application fee.

If your application has been accepted you will pay the $80 exam fee and go on to take the exam.

The exam consists of 2 closed-book parts.

The first part consists of 80 questions and has a 160-minute time limit.

The first part of the exam consists of the following questions:

  • 7 questions: Gas piping
  • 8 questions: Gas venting

You need a score of 70% or higher on both parts separately to pass the exam.

If you have passed the exam you can go on and apply for your license.

There is a $52 licensure fee.

Master Plumber License

To apply for your Master Plumber License you must have worked at least 1,700 hours as a licensed journeyman.
